If you ever get a chance to upload the last 2 videos & ebooks, I’d love to still get them. I missed most of the business practices class and am definitely interested to hear what you had to say. (any chance you would let me attend your upcoming one??)

So I decided to learn WordPress just recently. I have a long way to go, but I’m wondering a few things about Themes.
How do you decide what theme will work for your design site?
Do you offer WP designs on ANY theme, or only specific ones (the ones you’ve purchased)?
If a customer wants to hire you, but you don’t own the theme they want, how do you handle that? Do you charge them for it?
There is so much to absorb, my head is spinning!

I know this is an old thread, but I think these are good questions. I have the Studiopress Pro Plus package, so I don’t charge customers for Gensesis themes. Structural features are the best way to choose your theme. I usually look for nav bar placement and layout configurations, or any other special features the client is looking for (such as dates formatted like the Family Tree theme.)
The first theme I ever customized was Family Tree, but looking back on it that might not have been the best choice for a beginner. I’m just now learning how to customize the generic Child Theme from Studiopress, and I think that might be a good choice for beginners too. It doesn’t have a ton of features, but that also means that it doesn’t have a ton of things to conflict with what you’re trying to code! It’s all personal preference, I’d love to hear what other designers think!

I use Genesis as well and found a very simple child theme (Buster) that I started working with and really love. I think it’s flexible enough to do just about anything you have in mind.
I totally agree with Katelyn though – it’s really a personal preference and decision based on the needs/wants for the site you are working on.

I would guess that it doesn’t and $75.00 is an expensive price to pay but we’ll have to see how many people bite the bullet and go through with the purchase since the install numbers are available to the public.

Hi I love your Arklow theme. Its the best theme I’ve found on the web for my uses. I would like to remove the right side widget with the RSS/Twitter/Facebook links and images. I am using the ad space for those instead. I dont use rss and would like to remove the email subscription widget too. Both of these seem to be hidden somehow in the code and i cannot figure out how to remove them.Thankyou for your help.Joey

Hinall,
I’m Kate and I run Kate.simple.web.design.
My little business started as I was offering my help to friends who wanted to start a blog for their photography or craft business but had no idea where to start. Sominhave been trying to out the puzzle together for them and it just grew.
I cannot code blogs (yet), my skills are in graphic design and above average web knowledge. so I build blogs/sites using templates etc.
I love Prophoto! I do custom designs for Prophoto blogs, but it is an expensive platform for clients to purchase, so I’d like to get comfortable in something a little more affordable. Blogger and WordPress.
I am keen to learn from you all here, I recently got started on the Genesis theme, but got a little stuck, so im going to do some of the workshops offered here, to increase my skills.
Look forward to hanging around

Hi Kate,
Nice to meet you! I definitely recommend the Blog & Web Design Workshop if you are ready to learn more about coding & using WordPress/Genesis! It helped me a lot when I was first getting started.

I’m currently working on a site for a client on Thesis. I normally use Genesis … but since she already had thesis, I thought it would be easier to just stick with it. So I decided on a simple design. I figured I would just swap the images for the header, and the menu buttons .. and that would be easy and not cause any problems. Well … I tried that, and now I have a syntax error and the whole site is down! I copied the original code before I started … and I put the code back as it was , and the error is still there.
Does anyone know how to fix this?? I’m at a total loss!!
Thanks so much for any advice!!!!!

Can you put a link to the site? Or tell us what the error message says?
Also, chances are that you probably need to do your own coding. Simply pasting your image link into coding doesn’t mean that it’s original. Just a warning as many designers are willing to approach this issue with someone if they feel their coding has been stolen.
I’m sure your intentions weren’t to steal, but if you’re using another designer’s coding without rewriting your own, someone can view it as this.

Hey Ro! In my opinion it’s easier to just start with a template you KNOW how to work with. Did you go into her file manager in her hosting account and re-load the files? Or is her site still down? Do you have a link?

I am VERY new! I have a simple button I have created that links to a page on my blog. I have not created a blog for my design services. It would be just another thing to do and to check. I want to try to keep it all in one place and make it easier for myself if I can. Here is my blog address: http://www.anappleadaywisdom.com and the design page is: http://anappleadaywisdom.com/a…..esigns/. I had help doing my own blog redesign a few months ago. The person that did it, teaches as she does. I learned LOADS and thought, hey I can do this, too! So I started dabbling. I am very inexperienced in creating graphics. But I can do the technical things to create the blogs and layouts very well. Here are links for two Blogger redesigns my friends let me do: http://www.savinginsumnerco.blogspot.com/ and http://savingmakescents-savingmakescents.blogspot.com/. So anyway, it was hard to design my own button for my design services and have it match/coordinate with my blog’s new look. Tell me what you think about all of these if you don’t mind. If it’s alot, sorry to overload 🙂

Hi, everyone!
I’m new member here. Let’s start with my little biography. My name is Joyce. I’m a single mother of two teen boys! Now, I’m working with my clients who are blind. Here, I already signed up for the Blog Designer Network courses within 4 weeks, I’m still learning how to use the Adobe Photoshop C5 for the blog project but it is still complicated to me.
When I complete these courses, I would like to learn more. My goal is to start the blog designing business online, it should be launched by Spring 2012 or earlier before Summer 2012.
If you are professional blog designer, then tell me how to start the business before I start to do so..
Thank you,
J –

Hi Joyce. Welcome! I launched my design business one year ago this March. I learned a lot through online tutorials, asked questions from other designers I respected and then I took the Blog Designer Course from April Durham.
I look at countless blog design sites just to gather ideas for starting my own business. I had previous experience in graphic design and photoshop so that was a plus for me in starting design for blogs.
My first customer was a blog friend and I actually did the design for free for word of mouth sake. After that one design I began receiving referral after referral.
I recommend practicing on a test site just to get your feet wet, offer a free design to a friend (who has blog followers
) take any courses you can online and just google things to learn more.

Hi Guys, I’m new here and having a difficult time putting the final touch on my first (eekk!) real blogger design- the client would like three columns instead of two. Any advice/tweaks you recommend? I’ve searched everywhere and can’t seem to find anything that works with my current coding. Thanks so much!!
*updated I figured it out thanks to April, woohoo! Thank you!!!
here's the site that was helpful http://thecutestblogontheblock.com/blog-secrets/145-how-to-get-a-3-column-template.html

Hello my name is Nicole. I just starting my graphic design (print) business. I love designing and wanted to learn more about blog design. I am looking to learn so that I can use blog design to improve my own blog. I ordered the Blog Designer Workshop Tutorial and watched the videos. I already found some things that I need to improve within my header. One of them being the Scriptina font (overused). I happen to like that font..lol
My website is not completed but you can find it at http://www.SapphireGraphics.co. You can let me know anything else you see that is wrong with it too if you like.
Best Regards,
Nicole

Hi Nicole! Just checked out your site – it’s looking REALLY amazing! Great use of patterns and textures. Awesome drop-down effects as well. The only suggestion we have is to make sure your slideshow images are nice and crisp and at a high resolution…they look a little fuzzy! Great job though!

Welcome to theBDN Nicole!
Your site looks great!
A few pointers on the site:
It seems it does take a bit of time to first load, I would suggest contacting Dodaddy to see if there are any problems with your site or server that it is on.
I have ran a load time test on your site as seen here:
http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#…..raphics.co
It looks like the times that take the longest time to load is your middle menu area:
http://screencast.com/t/Yv2j6rFvCC
I am not sure how you have that setup, but maybe linking to the image directly might speed that up a bit, instead of using the wp thumbnail link.
Overall it looks like a great site, good luck with your new biz!
